APIA: MONDAY 25 MARCH 2013: A student at the Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC) took his own life several days before graduation last week.

The incident is under investigation, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Fauono Talalelei Tapu said.

The suicide victim was a young man from Manono-tai, who was found hanging inside one of APTC’s training room.

The deceased was a Cookery student who lived on campus with international students.

His friends believe a troubled relationship with a woman, a fellow student, may have been the cause of the suicide.

Counsellors from Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG), in response to a request from APTC’s management, spoke to students afterwards.

In a separate incident a schoolgirl from a school close to Apia who took her own life, was laid to rest last week.

Police will brief the media on both incidents in their weekly media conference on Tuesdays.

So sad…These kids just don’t wake up in the morning and decide to end their lives, something severe happened to push them to do it. As both were students, were these kids by any chance bullied and teased in school by other students or staff? If so, then the culprits must face the consequences of their actions. The schools and their staff should be more vigilant and look out for signs of students who are stressed and depressed and refer them to councilling. Programs should be implemented as well to educate students that bullying, teasing and harrassment is not acceptable and to prevent a negative outcome eg it can lead to death among other negative reasons.
