3 Police officers appear on corruption, assault and insult

APIA: Tuesday 17th July 2012: Inspector Uelese Lolo appeared before the District Court again today on four charges of official corruption and one charge of possession of an unlawful weapon.
The Inspector’s counsel Fepulea’i Amperosa Roma entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. The matter has been scheduled for hearing on the 5th December 2012 and the Prosecution stated that they would have five or six witnesses.
Corporal Kennaway Maisa faces charged one count of actual bodily harm and one count of assault. Fepulea’i who was also his counsel requested that the matter be adjourned without plea for one week in order to obtain instructions from his client. The matter has been scheduled for the 24th July for mention.
Another police officer, Corporal Siaosi Salapo was charged for insulting words. Muriel Lui from the Attorney General’s office appeared as Prosecutor. She requested that the matter be adjourned to the next mention date in order to finalize charges and see if there are additional charges against the Defendant as she had just received his file today.
The application was granted by Judge Vaepule Vaemoa Vaai and the matter has been adjourned to the 7th August for mention. The corporal was on bail before he appeared in court this morning. Siaosi is currently suspended from the Ministry of Police and Prisons. He was ordered by Judge Vaai to surrender his travel documents and he continues to be remanded on bail.
Sergeant Kirk Gale was also charged for false pretense last month. The charge against him was withdrawn by leave and the matter to be handled by the Attorney General’s office and to be heard before the Police Tribunal.
