APIA: THURSDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2015: The idea of a coalition party as the Government of the day is favoured by Opposition Member of Parliament, Levaopolo Talatonu Vaai.

He also favours the existence of either 03 to 04 political parties over the current two parties.

He said the current system is not healthy.

“Two political parties mean the country is governed by only two viewpoints,” said Levaopolo.

MP’s have different opinions and there is a need for more parties so these opinions could be voiced, said Levaopolo.

He wants to see more political parties contest next year’s general elections as to have a better chance of having a transparent and accountable government.

He also believes that the healthiest number for any party is 26/27.

“Corruption is not from the political parties, but from the power of the numbers held by a political party,” said Levaopolo.

HRPP currently rules with a 37 majority while the opposition has only 12.

“Any government with that kind of number is less concerned over the operation of their administration because they have the numbers,” said Levaopolo.

“If an MP decides to defect and join another political party, it does not affect the party because of the numbers they have.”

Levaopolo has not officially declared where he would be running from in the 2016 general election.

However, his party leader Palusalue Faapo 11 told Talamua in a previous interview, that Levaopolo will compete for one of the seats in the Itu Salega constituency.

Both Salega seats are currently held by the Opposition party.

This is Levaopolo’s second term in Parliament.

The general election in March 2016, but already, HRPP and Tautua Samoa are on the hunt for prominent candidates to boost their chances of winning.
