APIA: WEDNESDAY 10 DECEMBER 2014: Police have confirmed that a 21 year old female from the village of Vaipouli and Avao in Savai’i committed suicide at the weekend.
The Acting Commissioner of Police, Fauono Talalelei Tapu, said that there was a report from Safotu Hospital early Saturday morning that there was a woman at the hospital fighting for her life from an attempted suicide. She passed away the following day.
Police reports the young woman used a rope to hang herself and she was rushed to hospital by relatives who found her hanging at the back of their family home.
In a separate incident, mystery surrounds the death of a 22 year old man of Lalomauga village whose body was found hanging from a kuava tree last Sunday morning.
The last time the family saw the deceased was when his older brother sent him to buy cigarettes last Saturday night.
Police report says the deceased never returned home that night.
There was no mention of any incidents or arguments between the deceased or anyone of his family to suspect a motive to take his own life.
“Around 8.00 on Sunday morning, a young girl on her way to Sunday school saw the young man hanging from the kuava tree,” said the Assistant Police Commissioner and media spokesman officer Fauono Talalelei Tapu.
The young girl went back home and told her parents who rushed to the scene.
The young man was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
Police investigations continue.
And in Savai’i, a 49 year old woman of Lano Savaii was found dead at sea last week. The police report says the woman went for a swim at around 4.00pm and when she did not return home, her went looking for her and found her body floating in the water.
She was rushed to Tuasivi hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Fauono said there would be no post mortem as the cause of death has been identified. An inquest to notify the police and hospital findings will be held on 26 January 2015.
