APIA, SAMOA: TUESDAY 17 MAY 2016:  The Congregational Christian Church annual Conference now on its second day at headquarters at Malua has elected Reverend Vavatau Taufao as the new General Secretary.

It was one of the first issues on the agenda following the termination last week of the General Secretary Reverend Afereti Uili by the Elders Committee.

The new Secretary, Reverend Vavatau Taufao was the Director of Education for the Church and is a former Mathematics lecturer at the National University of Samoa.

Reverend Kerisiano Soti of the Elders committee of the church confirmed with the media the decision to suspend Reverend Uili after perusing evidence against him.

“The disciplinary matters of church Ministers is dealt with by the Elders Committee, but the election of the General Secretary is the duty of the General Assembly,” explained Reverend Kerisiano Soti.

The Elders Committee has stripped Reverend Uili of both his Secretarial duties as well as his ministerial duties for five years.

Reverend Soti said Reverend Uili and a girl involved were brought before the Elders Committee, and the decision to suspend Reverend Uili, was based on what the Elders learnt from that meeting.

Reverend Uili is a former principal at Malua Theological College resigned due to health issues. However, the church General Assembly last year elected him as the new Secretary to replace Reverend Dr. Iutisone Salevao.
