APIA: TUESDAY 24 JUNE 2014: Development in the country has seen India and Samoa’s relationship grow for the past 40 years.
Today that relationship was further cemented by the acceptance of India new High Commissioner, His Excellency Ravi Thapar’s credentials by Samoa’s Head of State, His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi.
“It is a privilege to visit this beautiful country which is famous for the warmth and hospitality of its friendly people,” said High Commissioner of India, Mr. Ravi Thapar.
His Excellency said India and Samoa share close and cordial relations strengthened by their Commonwealth backgrounds and their mutual vision of securing prosperity and inclusive growth for their people.
His Highness reiterated the important role played by India in setting up the Samoa National Kidney Foundation by providing dialysis machines and equipment.
India has also allocated 16 scholarships under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme for Samoan candidates.
His Excellency is hoping Samoa will utilize the programme wisely.
“There are promising prospects for strengthening ongoing bilateral interaction between both countries,l” said His Excellency.
His Excellency is very much aware of Samoa’s dependency on the agricultural sector despite the good tourism revenues.
“All countries and economies today, howsoever distant or modest in size they might be, are interdependent and connected,” said His Excellency.
India and Samoa shares mutual concerns on security and peace issues.
“We hope that the Government of Samoa will continue with its traditional support for India’s position and convey formal endorsement for India’s candidature for permanent membership in the UN Security Council soon,” said His Excellency.
India is also a supporter of the Pacific Islands Forum and the Post- Forum Dialogue in pursuing common regional interests.
His Excellency is looking forward to working with Samoa, especially on the upcoming conference of Small Island Development State’s (SIDS).
“I am indeed confident that during your tenure as High commissioner of India to Samoa, the cordial relations that continue to exist between Samoa and India will be strengthened and enhanced,” said Samoa’s Head of State, His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi.
