APIA, SAMOA: FRIDAY 24 JUNE 2016: Second generation Samoans born overseas will find it easier to apply and obtain Samoan citizenship if the 2016 Amendment to the Citizenship Act is passed by parliament.

CEO of the Ministry of the Prime Minister, Agafili Shem Leo that is promoting the amendment said there are an increasing number of applications each year from overseas born second generation Samoans for citizenship especially those involved in professional sports and fields such as aviation.

Previously, Samoa has granted Samoan passports for overseas born athletes to represent Samoa in the South Pacific Games, the Commonwealth and two American based field athletes of Samoan descent are representing Samoa in the Rio Olympics.

The Bill was tabled in the current session of parliament including an amendment to the Bankruptcy Act to stop those declared bankrupt from leaving the country with the official signee’s approval. A loophole in the current law has seen some of those declared bankrupt leave the country for good.
