APIA: MONDAY 1 JULY 2013: Funds for monasteries that belong to a Catholic religious order have poured in.

A radiothon in the weekend gathered $317 000, chairman of the Samoa Charity Foundation for Carmelite Missions, La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi said.

Today a cheque for $20 000 was handed in, La’aulialemalietoa said.

“There are more coming in and we acknowledge the support by everyone,” said the chairman, who is also the Speaker of Parliament.

He said the support from the public was tremendous.

Monies from the fundraising will go towards monasteries in Samoa, Tonga and Wallis and Futuna, which are run by nuns of the Carmelite order.

La’aulialemalietoa said their foundation has existed for more than 10 years and their work continues that of past members.
