Cherelle Fruean with the Assistant CEO of the Ministry of Women and Social Development, Ms. Louise Apelu in New York last week
APIA: MONDAY 16 MARCH 2015: A young female entrepreneur is part of Samoa’s official delegation to the 59th session of the Convention on the Status of Women in New York this week.
Ms. Cherelle Latafale Fruean, who is also an executive member of the Young Womens Christian Association of Samoa is being co-sponsored by the International Labour Organization and UN Women in an effort to ensure the inclusion of young women in the Session.
“Youth participation at the international level is an important factor in ensuring that all perspectives are taken into account,” said David Lamotte, Director of ILO Office for Pacific Island Countries in Suva.
In the past year, ILO has supported several Samoan youth in taking part in regional and international meetings. During SIDS, ILO sponsored 50 young men and women from Savaii to take part in the SIDS Youth Conference.
“Young people bring something unique to the table, they face different challenges, and issues such as youth employment and decent work, are just some of the issues they can address from their perspective,” Lamotte said.
It is in ILO’s work with governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations in countries and regions that the results of ILO policies and strategies can be seen in practice – including promoting equality between women and men in their working lives. The ILO and its constituents around the world pursue a wide range of activities that use gender mainstreaming as a strategy in order to achieve gender equality.
ILOs sponsorship of Ms. Fruean comes under ILOs Samoa Country Programme which addresses among others, youth and gender.
“I’m excited about this opportunity and the support of ILO,” said Ms. Fruean.
This is not the first time the young entrepreneur has taken part in CSW, whose presence in the meeting has been praised by the regional CSO community.
With the support of the ILO Pacific, Ms. Fruean will be staying in New York for the second week of CSW to take part in side events and follow on activities.
