Italy and Samoa continue close relationship

APIA: WEDNESDAY 04 FEBRUARY 2015: Italy and Samoa have reaffirmed their close relationship with the presentation this week of the credentials of Italy’s Ambassador to Samoa, H.E Carmello Barbarello to His Highness the Head of State Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi.

“Samoa and Italy established diplomatic relations in 1987 and since then, Samoa has continued to benefit from Italy’s development assistance,” said the Head of State.

The assistance is channeled through aid from the European Union and the Food Agriculture Organisation.

The two countries both share a common interests in social development and are united in spearheading programmes set down by the United Nations Organisation and its various agencies.

“We share a common commitment to world peace and security and the promotion of democracy and fundamental human rights,” said His Highness. “It was pertinent for the two countries to build on the partnership on issues of mutual importance to their people.”

Italy and Samoa also share a common interest in sports especially rugby.

The head of the Samoa Rugby Union High Performance Unit, Tuala Mathew Vaea once coached Italy’s rugby team.

H.E. Dr. Barbarello holds a degree in Economics from Naples University and joined the Foreign Service in 1994 as the General Directorate for Personnel at the press and Information Service as Second Secretary.

In 1998 he was appointed First Secretary for Commercial and later Second Secretary in 2000 at the Italian Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

From 2000-2004, he was appointed Consul for the Italian Embassy in Athens, Greece until he was appointed Deputy Head of the unit for the Authorisation of Armament Materials (UAMA), Director-General for Multilateral Financial and Economic Cooperation, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Italy.

In 2008, he was appointed as Commercial Counsellor for the Italian Embassy in Argentina and was promoted First Counsellor in 2009.

In 2012, he was appointed First Counsellor, Commercial for the Italian Embassy in New Delhi, India until he was appointed as Ambassador of Italy to New Zealand.

Dr. Carmello Barbarello was awarded the honour “Cavaluere Ufficiale”, Order of Merit of Republic of Italy in 2004.

His Excellency and delegation were welcomed with an ava ceremony. He was accompanied by his mother and a first generation Samoan of of the Cafarelli family of Samoa and Italy.
