Land Transport CEO investigated

APIA: Wednesday 22 August 2012: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of  Land Transport Authority Leasi Galuvao Vainalepa is under investigation after a traffic incident at Tuana’imato two weeks ago.

Police spokesperson Leaupepe Fatu Pula confirmed the investigation after Leasi allegedly smashed the Authority’s car LTA01 Toyota Hilux in the front gate of a family home at Tuanaimato. Police suspect alcohol was involved. Leasi has funded the gate refurbishments.

In a separate incident,  Francis Mika of Taufusi has been charged for the posession of an unlawful weapon (gun) in a public place.

Police said the gun, a 38 revolver is prohibited by law in Samoa and Mika will appear in Court next week.

A 42 year old man Talisolia Aiono of Fasito’o-Uta is also charged for negligent driving causing the death of a four year boy from the village of Utuali’i last Tuesday.

Leaupepe said the child and his mother were riding home on a Manono-tai bus when they stopped at Utuali’i. The child got off the bus first and crossed the road when a car overtook the bus and hit him.

Leaupepe said Talisolia is charged for speeding as he did not heed the limited speed when overtaking another vehicle.

Leaupepe also said busdrivers should use bus stops to disembark their passengers to ensure the safety of pedestrians and also other drivers on the road.

The driver will appear in court on Tuesday nextweek.
