APIA: FRIDAY 16 JANUARY 2015: The Minister for Education, Sports and Culture (MESC) Magele Mauiliu Magele is blaming the teachers for the low pass marks in this year Pacific Senior Secondary Certificate (PSSC) mathematics exams.
Yesterday, MESC announced during a press conference that ¾ of students that sat the mathematics exams failed.
Magele told the media today, that this is due to the subject not being taught well in schools.
Asked to elaborate, he pointed to the teachers for poor delivery of the mathematics as a subject.
He also said the students’ real test will be at the university level where they will have a broader and more competitive approach to learning and achieving the best. But they have to have a firm foundation from primary and leading up to University.
The math exams paper was prepared and set in Fiji until a few years back, when MESC decided to set their own exam paper.
It was pointed out to Prime Minister Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Dr. Sailele Malielegaoi during his weekly radio programme yesterday, that more students passed mathematics when the papers were set in Fiji.
Now MESC is setting their own standards and criteria for pass, yet, students are failing.
Tuilaepa laughed and referred the issue back to MESC.
