NetGO Junior Netball National Tournament on target

Netball New Zealand Ambassador Grace Kara (Nee Rasmussen) promoting the sport in Samoa

APIA, SAMOA – TUESDAY 14 AUGUST 2018: The 2018 NetGO Junior Netball National Championship tournament this weekend is boosted by Netball New Zealand’s ambassador and current Silver Fern Grace Kara (nee Rasmussen).

Of Samoan origins, Grace is in Samoa to promote the NetGO programme and conduct netball clinics.  She hails from the villages of Vaiala and Tufuiopa.  Grace has played 63 test caps for New Zealand making her debut in 2010.

“Over the past three months our coaches and players have been working hard in preparing for this tournament. We look forward to seeing the amount of development that has been made, as well as ensuring that everyone involved in this event enjoys the experience.”

NetGO Samoa is a Pacific Sporting Partnership between Netball New Zealand and Netball Samoa. The initiative looks to make a significant and positive impact through the promoting of healthy lifestyle messages and encourages children to play netball and stay active.

The National Championships will be held this Saturday 18th August 2018 at Pesega LDS College in Upolu and 10 schools will compete for the Fiame Naomi Mataafa Trophy.

Pacific Sporting Partnership Country Co-ordinator Ruta Schwalger said that it is exciting to have Grace Kara in country to celebrate with the coaches and students who have been a part of the NetGO Samoa programme.

Her specialities of quickness off the line, silky feeding skills, ability to find space and determined defensive efforts, have combined to produce an accomplished and clever wing attack.

Grace is humbled by the opportunity, “I’m hugely privileged to be selected as an ambassador from NZ to come over and share my experiences and knowledge of the game with the netball community in Samoa. I have always been proud of my culture, the ability to bring two things that I am extremely passionate about is a special thing.”
