APIA; 21 June 2011: The Oceania Athletics Championships kicks off this afternoon with teams from 22 countries competing.
Competition starts following the colorful parade of the teams behind their country’s flag on Beach Road and the welcome by the Prime Minister in front of the Government Building.
Samoa was a last minute location by the Prime Minister said that given the world class sports facilities available in Samoa, the country can host any sporting event anytime.
Coach for the Tonga team, Nehemia Kakau Fakaata’i, said his team is here to fight for a gold medal. He said, this event is very important to expose the young athletes to competition above what they would be exposed to at home. Only four athletes are representing the Kingdom.
Samoa’s hopes are on Shaka Sola who is a Commonwealth medal winner in Shot put and discus.
Competition is at the Apia Park Stadium.
