APIA, SAMOA – TUESDAY 25 SEPTEMBER 2018: The Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS) has handed over orchid seedlings to local nursery owners under its orchid propagation project.
The orchid propagation project is under the Environment and Renewable Energy Division (ERED) of SROS with financial assistance from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project aims to propagate different types of orchid species with the assistance provided to the people of Samoa on how to earn money from the flowers.
Research into the orchids includes trialing the most appropriate growth media, orchid propagation of seeds and seedlings, and studying the favorable conditions in which different species thrive – especially the percentage of sunlight exposure.
Throughout this project, ERED has been working together with local nursery owners to learn and exchange information on orchid species and how these flowers can improve business for the local nurseries in Samoa.
Outcomes from these exchanges with the local flower growers have proven to be of great value to the development of the work conducted in SROS and has also improved the relationship between SROS and its local partners. Handing over of these high value orchid seedlings illustrates the value of this relationship and SROS desire to assist local businesses.
