Police officer sentenced for two months in prison

APIA: WEDNESDAY 03 OCTOBER 2012:  A Police officer, Corporal Kennaway Maisa, 40 year old male of Lalovaea is serving a two months jail sentence for assaulting a 26 year old female police officer, Henifa Bryce of Vaitele Uta on the 30th November last year.

The incident occurred during a party at Taumeasina.

The prosecutor from the Attorney General’s Office Phaeera Valoia told the court that the deepest of the injuries on the officers face was 7cm and that assault carries a sentence of 12 months in prison.

Justice Vaepule said “the position you had in the Ministry is to train new recruits. But your actions did not set a good example for new officers.”

He also stated that the law is not only for police officers but for the general public. They should not only enforce the law but abide by it like everyone else.

The police officer was under the influence of  alcohol at the tine she assaulted the female officer. He pleaded guilty to the charge, and he also apologized to the victims family. As a first offender Justice Vaepule senbetnced him to two month in prison.
