Three prisoners at Tafa’igata prison appeared in Court today facing extra charges of burglary, of trying to break Cell No 2 for them to escape.

The three prisoners are Filiki Iki, Faigame Toelau and Ta’ai Togia and have spent more than 10 years in prison.

The Police Assistant Commissioner Leaupepe Fatu Pula said Police found out about hole in the cell wall on the 7th of April. He said the trio had cracked the bricks of the cell wall and made a big hole for them to escape.

“The size of the hole tells you this has been planned for sometime,” said Leaupepe. “They have been covering it so that the Police officers cannot tell what they were planning.”

Only two of the prisoners appeared in the District Court today – Filiki Iki 28 and Faigame 26 years old who both pleaded guilty. Ta’ai was absent from Court today. Judge Vaepule Vaemoa Vaai will sentence the prisoners on 25 June.
