Samoa appoints new Attorney General and Public Prosecutor

 

APIA, SAMOA: TUESDAY 08 MARCH 2016: The Government has appointed a new Attorney General. He is Lemalu Herman Retzlaff who is the son of a former Attorney General, and former Deputy Prime Minister Misa Telefoni.

Lemalu graduated with a Masters in Law and Political Science from the Auckland University and had been active in the Pacific and Samoan communities in New Zealand through his support of the Labour Party.

He replaces Aumua Ming Leung Wai who did not seek reappointment at the end of his three year contract.

Government has also appointed the former head of the Attorney General’s Criminal Division and senior lawyer,

Precious Chang to be the first Director of Public Prosecution. She heads the newly established National Prosecutions Office that was separated from the Attorney General’s office late last year.

The Public Prosecution office is now in charge of all police prosecutions.
