APIA: MONDAY 09 MARCH 2015: Eighteen Samoan athletes are set to embark on a life changing journey as Special Olympics Samoa in collaboration with Ministry of Education, Sports & Culture (MESC), Football Federation Samoa (FFS) and Digicel announce the delegation to represent Samoa the 2015 World Games in Los Angeles America.

Samoa will be represented in four of the twenty five sports offered including, Athletics, Football, Bocce, and Power Lifting. Each sport has been modified to be inclusive to athletes with Intellectual Disabilities and each representative has been selected by the selection panel that assessed both on field talent and ability to travel safely to the United States.

To be held between July 25 and August 2, the World Games will host competitions in twenty-five sports, with more than 30,000 volunteers and 500,000 spectators joining together in venues throughout Los Angeles to celebrate the accomplishments of 10,000 athletes and coaches from 177 Special Olympics Programs around the world.

Accompanying Samoa’s Athletes will be six coaches recruited from our Youth Engagement and Family Networking Programs. These volunteer coaches have successfully participated in coach training courses run in partnership between SO Samoa and larger sporting bodies. Their sustained dedication and service to SO Samoa’s programs will ensure their experiences return to the grassroots level benefiting athletes in their villages.

Welcoming the Samoan team to America will be Samoa’s Host Town Oxnard which is located along the coast of Southern California. The Host Town Program gives each community an opportunity to showcase to the world what makes them special, but more importantly to provide citizens with a better understanding of intellectual disabilities that will lead to acceptance and inclusion for all.

After participating in the welcome festivities the Athletes will then attend the Opening Ceremony at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Athletes will then be transported to the Athlete Village at either The University of Southern California (USC) or the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).
