Suspended Savali Editor found guilty on five charges of indecency

APIA: FRIDAY 29 MAY 2015: The suspended Editor of the Government newspaper Savali , Tupuola Terry Tavita was found guilty on 5 charges of sexual offences in the District Court today.

The charges includes 2 counts of indecent assaults, 2 counts of assault and 1 count of issuing insulting words.

Tupuola denied the charges against him hence the trial that had the complainant, a second year journalism student at the National University of Samoa who was doing work attachment with Savali in December last year, explain in detail the events that led to the charges.

In February 2015, Tupuola pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

According to her evidence before Judge Vaepule Vaemoa Vaai, she was appointed to cover two news items on the 16th and the 22nd of December 2014.

Tupuola accompanied her on both occasions at Mulifanua and Lotofaga –Uta, Aleipata. On both events, Tupuola assaulted the complainant.

After the Lotofaga-Uta incident, Tupuola left the complainant at Lotofaga and returned to Apia. The complainant then requested a ride back to town with other reporters who were covering the same event.

Tupuola will be sentenced on the 26th June 2015.
