Swim the Harbour of History

2013 Indpendence Swim

2013 Indpendence Swim

APIA: WEDNESDAY 29 MAY 2013: Apia Harbour, the site of significant events of the recent past, is an active place on Independence Day especially because it is where the finish line of longboat races is located.

Now it’s the location for another water activity being offered by Samoa International Events.

Stroke this “Harbour of History” says International Events, let’s go swim it.

It’s the second swim the group has organised as part of Independence celebrations.

The Independence Swim on Saturday morning, 1 June, is a rare chance for locals and visitors alike to swim Apia Harbour safely, SIE says.

“This is the Harbour of History, the harbour that has played a key role in the recent history of our nation.

“It is the graveyard of US and German warships from the Great Hurricane of 15 Mar 1899.

“It is the same harbour through which the deadly Spanish Flu entered Samoa on the SS Talune that decimated a third of our population.

“It is the Harbour that was the last and the first point of land contact for many Mau leaders that were exiled by the Super powers in those difficult years – the Independence Swim is the opportunity to Swim the very waters of History as we celebrate 51 years of Samoan National Independence – Register for the swim and the lunch that follows at Sails Restaurant:

“This is not a Race but a group swim that starts at Vaisigano at Aggie Grey’s Hotel Seawall steps and ends at Sails Restaurant 3kms away.”

Shorter option – From the Tanoa Tusitala Hotel seafront where a second group will start from and join the 3kms swimmers as they come through the Sogi channel.

Kiddies Option: 500m Swim at Sails Restaurant (at the end of the long Swims)
