APIA, SAMOA – MONDAY 18 FEBRUARY 2019: Two candidates were confirmed today for the Fa’asaleleaga No.2 by election 25 March.

They are Namulauulu Sami Leota and Papali’i Li’o Oloipoloa Ta’eu Masepa’u.

Both were presented to the HRPP leader by their constituency representatives at a meeting at the party headquarters today.

Papali’i is lawyer and a former Deputy Commissioner of Police. He is no stranger to politics as he was a former opposition MP under the Tautua Samoa Party and did not make it in the 2016 general elections.

“Time changes and the important role of a MP now is the development of the constituency and people, and that can only be done under the ruling Government HRPP,” said Papali’i.

Namulauulu was unsuccessful in the 2016 general election when the seat was won by the late Pa’u Sefo Pa’u who passed away last month.

Namulaulu is a businessman and is the President of the Samoa Rugby Union.

In accepting the candidates, HRPP leader Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi emphasized the importance of working and agreeing together to the party’s decisions.

The candidates are now official but they still have to submit personal information so HRPP could give out a full and detailed background about them.

“In the past, Opposition candidates misled HRPP supporters that they were HRPP members in order to get votes, so we make sure of our members by officiating them in gatherings like today,” said Tuilaepa.

He said they are expecting more HRPP candidates and they will go through the same process that Papali’i and Namulauulu went through today by signing oaths to cement their loyalty to HRPP.

The nomination period for the by-election starts 25 February and closes on the 01 March. Polling day is set on the 25 March 2019.
