APIA: Samoa is in for a treat as world renowned reggae band UB40 is set to perform a concert during the 50th Independence Celebrations on the 1st June. It will also feature Truth and Jahstice Headlock.

The group is brought to our shores through BlueSky Samoa in association with Purely Reggae. The concert is one of the first official events of the Independence Celebrations. It is the first time UB40 will perform in Samoa.

“Five years ago I got in contact with UB40’s tour  manager Paul Hunter and asked if they would be able to perform at our Independence Celebrations,” Aumua Henry Wulf of Purely Reggae explained.

Aumua said that he had asked them in 2007 when they held a concert in New Zealand if they could come to Samoa but they had a really busy schedule but once it was confirmed they were going to perform at the Independence celebrations he began to look for funds for the event and BlueSky offered their support. He said 26 members are travelling from Birmingham to Samoa.

“One of the main members of the band Ali Campbell left the group but has been replaced by his brother. UB40 have another concert in Europe on the 7th June so they are on a tight schedule. They are still producing records and releasing a new album this year,” said Aumua.

He thanked all those who had worked together to make this event possible. “On behalf  of Purely Reggae I’d like to thank the Chairman of the Independence Celebrations Committee Tolofuaivalelei Falemoe Leiataua for allowing UB40 to be part of the celebrations  also BlueSky for their support for without them this event would not be possible, I’d also like like to thank UB40 for considering Samoa as it’s destination  to perform for their fans here.”Aumua said this would be a once in a life time opportunity and the public should not miss out.

BlueSky Samoa Chief Executive Officer Aoe’e Adolfo Montenegro stated ” This company through Samoatel and Ministry of Post and Telecommunications has served Samoa throughout the last 50 years so we felt it was  important to be part of the celebrations of Samoa’s 50th Independence day. UB40’s music  has been popular with our people throughout the years so we are happy to be involved in hosting their first ever concert in Samoa. We thank the Committee of Samoa’s 50th Independence  for recognising this event as an official event and we thank Aumua Henry Wulf and Purely Reggae for the immense amount of work they’ve done to allow us to launch  this event today.”

The Chairman of the Independence Celebrations Committee Tolofuaivalelei Falemoe Leiataua also expressed gratitude at the launch, ” UB40 needs no

introduction as we all grew up listening to their music, most couples met and danced to their music,” he joked. ” We are happy to include this band in the Independence Celebrations  as it adds to the festive mood and celebrative atmosphere. I thank Aumua Henry Wulf and Purely Reggae for bringing UB40 to our shores and also BlueSky for their sponsorship. Bring on UB40!,” he said.

The concert will be held at Apia Park on the 1st June at 6pm and tickets are sold for $30 tala and available from any BlueSky retail store.
