APIA, SAMOA – TUESDAY 25, OCTOBER 2016: It was 2010 that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Samoa established diplomatic ties, and already signs of a flourishing relationship is in the horizon.
This was how His Highness the Head of State, Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi described the 6 year old friendship when he accepted the United Arabs new envoy to Samoa, His Excellency Dr. Obaid Al Hairi Salem Al Ketbi.
“Since the inception of diplomatic relationships between our two countries in 2010, Samoa and the UAE have grown closer in friendship and cooperation through the UAE-Pacific Partnership, bringing forth common grounds and mutual understanding between our countries,” said His Highness.
As a strong advocate for Pacific unity, he said Samoa is grateful for the assistance from the UAE on various projects such as education, infrastructure and renewable energy amounting to more than US$50 million.
Both countries have a common interest in food security, sustainable development and climate change.
His Highness made reference to the presence of an Arab renewable energy company MASDAR operating in Samoa.
The United Arab’s Ambassador, His Excellency Dr. Obaid Al Hairi Salem Al Ketbi reiterated His Highness hope for the two countries to grow closer in friendship and cooperation.
He highlighted MASDAR’s sponsoring of the new wind farm which will supply renewable energy to the people of Samoa.
“I am given the honour to present to you the Letter of Credence, the regards of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid bin Maktoum. I express my satisfaction in representing the UAE in Samoa, knowing the relations between our two friendly countries as excellent,” said Dr Obaid.
“I am pleased to accept the Letter of Credence from the President of the United Arab Emirates accrediting to you as Ambassador of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates to the Independent State of Samoa,” said His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi.
Dr. Obaid Al Ketbi is a highly qualified, skilled and experienced professional with over 38 years of military, homeland security and business management experience.
He holds degrees of BSc, MSc (engineering) and PhD (International Business).
He commenced his professional career in the UAE Armed Forces where he had a distinguished track record rising to the position of Chief of Logistic Staff.
Prior to his appointment as Ambassador, H.E. Dr Obaid Al Ketbi was a member of the decision making Council of the Government of Abu Dhabi Emirate – the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, and the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Abu Dhabi Police in charge of homeland Security (2008-2013).
H.E Obaid Al Ketbi will depart Samoa with his delegates tomorrow on Wednesday 26th October 2016 and will return to Canberra, Australia where he is based.
