APIA, SAMOA – 25 AUGUST 2020: Samoa has cancelled the repatriation flight from New Zealand scheduled to arrive this Friday.

The public was informed of the cancellation through a notice from Samoa’s High Commission in Wellington today.

The notice said the flight is cancelled due to valid reasons.

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi told the media this morning that Cabinet is meeting over the issue today.

The repatriation flight was supposed to be the last one for the next 2 months as Government review its strategy as Covid19 cases are rising in New Zealand and Auckland is on Level 3 lockdown until the end of this week.

The Director General of Health, Leausa Dr. Take Naseri said in a press conference last week that top priority should be on border closure as it is the only way to keep the Covid-19 from entering Samoa.

Samoa is among the ten Pacific Island countries still Covid-19 free and is taking every precaution given its close relation with New Zealand that saw the increase in cases within a Pacific island church community last week.
