Samoa Rugby pays tribute to rugby stalwart, the late Te’o Richard Tapeni

APIA, SAMOA – 16 APRIL 2020: Samoan Rugby has paid tribute to one of its many strong supporters, Te’o Richard Tapeni Fa’aiuaso who has served the national game in many roles over the years.

Te’o was up until his passing early yesterday morning, was a member of the SRU Judicial team, endorsed by World Rugby.

In a statement, SRU Chief Executive, Faleomavaega Vincent Fepulea’i said, “We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of SRU’s long standing servant of Samoan rugby, a selfless rugby man and a friend to many in the rugby fraternity.

“Richard had served Samoan rugby consistently since the 1980’s in various roles over the years and has been a leading stalwart of SRU’s Judiciary team in the Oceania region for many years.

“He gave so much of his time, mostly voluntarily to the game he loved and worked tirelessly behind the scenes.He has been the Match Commissioner for many local tournaments as well as for some Oceania and World Rugby tournaments.”

For the SRU, Te’o has performed many roles such as team manager for national selections, tournament director, and coordinated many international matches that have been held in Samoa since the1980’s.

He played rugby in his teens at school and with his beloved club Vaiala Ulalei Sports Club. The principal of Richards Law Firm, he was Club General Secretary for many years until 2000.

“Our thoughts are with his wife, Tia and their children as well as their families at this difficult time,” said SRU’s CEO.
